Event Description:
Rupture and repair in the therapeutic relationship refers to moments when trust, understanding, or connection between therapist and client is strained or broken (rupture), and the process of openly addressing and resolving that strain to rebuild trust and strengthen the relationship (repair).
This one-day training day offers therapists a focused introduction to working with rupture and repair in the therapeutic dyad through relational, attachment and mentalization-based approaches. Participants will explore how moments of disconnection, misunderstanding, or strain can be understood not as setbacks, but as potentially valuable opportunities for therapeutic understanding and change.
Learning to work effectively with rupture and repair in therapy is essential, as these moments are both inevitable and highly impactful. When ruptures are left unaddressed, they can lead to disengagement, misunderstanding, or even premature endings.
In this workshop participants will develop the understanding and skills needed to respond to ruptures with curiosity, emotional attunement, and reflective capacity. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining a mentalizing stance, navigating therapist–client dynamics in the moment, and facilitating meaningful repair processes that strengthen the therapeutic relationship and promote lasting change.
Learning Objectives
Drawing on principles of attachment, relational psychotherapy, and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), the training highlights the importance of understanding rupture through an intersubjective lens—encouraging curiosity about what can be stirred up and activated in both client and therapist.
This process supports therapists and clients to:
- Understand their triggers and vulnerabilities without inviting shame or blame.
- Make sense of their responses in light of their perceptions and experiences
- Openly explore misunderstandings and the way that individuals perceive and experience one another in a safe and trusting clinical environment
- Develop greater capacity to reflect on their own and others’ internal states, particularly under emotional pressure.
This workshop is suitable for both experienced therapists and therapists in-training or newly qualified of any modality.
Trainer:
Teresa Finlay is a UKCP accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapist, mentalization-based practitioner, clinical supervisor and trainer. She is also trained in relational psychoanalysis, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems.
Teresa has over 20 years’ clinical experience working in therapeutic communities, private practice, and university counselling services. She currently works with Beacon House, a specialist provider of therapeutic services for those affected by trauma.
