The Whale (2022)

This movie featuring Brendan Fraser is an American psychological drama featuring the themes around empathy and understanding another person’s trauma.

The Whale’ is an unflinching character study, a harsh depiction of self-destructive behaviours, mental illness, and inner turmoil. Following the life of morbidly obese English teacher Charlie as he attempts to make amends with his estranged daughter, ‘The Whale’ allows its audience no breathing room, with its humorous moments doing little to distract from the disturbing subject matter Aronofsky explores.

Infographic

This infographic is adapted from Patti Panicucci’s (2007) Learning Zone Model, which describes how growth and learning tend to occur just beyond our comfort zone, while recognising that moving too far too quickly can lead to overwhelm and panic rather than meaningful development.

  • Where do you notice yourself working from your own comfort zone, and where might gently stretching yourself deepen your therapeutic practice?
  • How do you recognise when a client is in a learning zone rather than moving into overwhelm, and how do you help them return to a sense of safety when needed?
  • What supports you in continuing to grow as both a therapist and a person, while remaining compassionate towards your own limits?

For therapists, the model offers a helpful reminder of the importance of working within a client’s window of tolerance—supporting gentle, manageable steps towards change while maintaining a sense of safety, curiosity, and connection.

Words to Ponder: Jed Diamond

Therapy is not only a journey of growth for the client; it is also an ongoing process of self-reflection and development for the therapist. Our presence in the therapy room is shaped not only by our training and experience, but by our own willingness to learn, heal, and deepen our understanding of ourselves.

  • How has your own personal journey influenced the way you support your clients?
  • What areas of yourself are you currently being invited to explore or develop?
  • How do you continue to nurture your growth, curiosity, and compassion as a therapist?
  • What experiences in the therapy room have taught you something about yourself?

Being a therapist means embracing a lifelong process of becoming. As we continue to grow as individuals, we create more space to meet our clients with presence, authenticity, and compassion. Our own evolution becomes an integral part of the healing relationship.

“When Food Becomes the Language” explores the deeper emotional meanings behind our relationship with food and how eating behaviours can become a way of communicating unspoken feelings, experiences, and struggles. The article considers how issues such as disordered eating, shame, trauma, attachment, grief, and self-esteem can be expressed through our relationship with food, encouraging therapists to look beyond behaviours and explore the underlying emotional needs.

The blog highlights the importance of approaching food-related difficulties with curiosity, compassion, and without judgement, recognising that these behaviours may have developed as ways of coping or surviving difficult experiences. It encourages therapists to create space for conversations about food in therapy, helping clients develop healthier ways of relating to themselves, their emotions, and their bodies.
