*Transference and Countertransference*
Event Description:
In this one-day workshop with Victoria Settle we will take a nuts-and-bolts look at two key concepts from the world of psychoanalysis.
Transference and countertransference are psychoanalytic terms that are used frequently in psychotherapy but can still be shrouded in mystery and can sometimes be overused to the point of becoming a general description of everything that our client is feeling (transference) or everything that we are feeling (countertransference.)
Many of us talk about transference and countertransference in slightly different ways and in this workshop we will explore all the different ways in which these important unconscious processes take place. We will look at the different facets of both and explore how to make use of the concepts in ways that support our clinical work.
Transference can be particularly hard to work with as it works outside of conscious awareness, both for our clients and for us. A client may find themselves feeling inexplicably irritated, dependent, or idealising towards us, without any clear sense of why, and part of our skill as practitioners is in noticing these dynamics without immediately interpreting them or dismissing them. We will spend time looking at how transference can show up not just in what clients say, but in the texture of the relationship itself.
Countertransference, meanwhile, is often where some of the richest clinical information lives. Whether we understand it as the feelings our clients evoke in us, or as the totality of our emotional response to the therapeutic encounter, learning to use it thoughtfully rather than simply managing or suppressing it is one of the more demanding and rewarding aspects of therapy work. We will explore how to distinguish between what belongs to us and what is being communicated through us, and how to let that distinction inform the way we work.
This workshop is for you if you are looking to deeply understanding how transference and countertransference can show up in your work and can enrich your understand of what happens between therapist and client. This workshop is for counsellors and psychotherapists of any modality, whether seasoned practitioners or newly-qualified.
