Summary: An exploration into the key issues relating to self-esteem and how to best support clients to let go of the negative self-narrative.

*Self-Esteem: Working with the Negative Mind*

Event Description:

You know how it is, someone, a client, a friend, who seems to lead their life rather well, tells you that they are terrified of some social event because they won’t know what to say. Or the youngster who has passed all their exams tells you that they are sure they will fail. Or the colleague who has practised for 15 years confesses that she feels she is a failure and doesn’t really know what she’s doing. Etc. etc. etc.

What you are witnessing is the day-to-day, normative operation of poor self-esteem, endemic particularly in the female population. A narrative endlessly retold and internally consolidated of worthlessness, failure, self-doubt. It gets in the way and, in our clients, can prove totally debilitating. It can disrupt work, relationships, social life, everything and at its worst will make it impossible for them to come anywhere near reaching their potential.

In this workshop esteemed Professor Julia Buckroyd will address a number of key issues in relation to self-esteem in the hope that we can enable our clients to let go of their damaging narrative and find a more creative way of engaging with themselves. These are as follows:

  • Where does our sense of self come from? How are our core beliefs about ourselves influenced by life experience and trauma?
  • How is the self-talk, the narrative about ourselves, good or bad, get maintained?
  • Dealing with the inner critic and finding self-acceptance through compassion for ourselves.
  • The work of change – the challenge of letting go of a time-expired narrative. What our brain thinks about this.
  • Arriving at a workable self-story which acknowledges capacities as well as limitations – I’m good at this, but not so good at that.
  • The liberating effect of authentic engagement with ourselves.

This workshop is suitable for both experienced therapists and those new to working with self-esteem issues, and suitable for therapists of all modalities.

Trainer:

Julia Buckroyd is Emeritus Professor of Counselling at the University of Hertfordshire and a therapist in private practice, specialising in working with people with all sorts of problems with food, weight, shape and size.
