Summary: An introduction to the principles and practice of EMDR therapy.

*EMDR Therapy: An Introduction*

Event Description:

This one-day workshop offers clinicians an engaging introduction to the principles and practice of EMDR therapy. It is ideal for those wishing to familiarise themselves with EMDR and how it works, as well as for anyone considering undertaking the full, standard EMDR training (7 days).

EMDR is a trans-diagnostic, integrative psychotherapy recommended by the World Health Organisation (2013) and NICE (2007) for the treatment of psychological trauma, with an expanding evidence base supporting its use for other mental health conditions. Rather than asking “does it work?”, the focus is now on “how does it work?” and “how can I integrate it into my practice?”.

When traumatic or disturbing experiences are not fully processed, they can remain “stuck” in the brain in their original, state-specific form. When triggered, they can intrude on current functioning — creating distress, intense emotions, and the sense of reliving the event. EMDR supports the brain’s natural capacity to process such experiences, often within a shorter timescale than other therapies. After successful EMDR processing, the event can be remembered without the same emotional charge.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to:

  • How traumatic experiences are encoded in the brain and body, and how they can intrude on daily life.
  • Why talking therapies alone may have limitations in resolving these memories.
  • How EMDR can facilitate the effective re-processing of traumatic or distressing events towards an adaptive resolution.
  • An overview of the symptoms of trauma and PTSD.
  • The Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model that underpins EMDR.
  • The 8-phase, 3-pronged approach of EMDR, illustrated with case examples from single incident trauma, complex PTSD, and developmental trauma.
  • A practical stabilisation technique (‘Safe/Calm Place’) that you can use with clients and for your own self-care.

The workshop will be delivered through illustrated presentations, video demonstrations, case discussions, and opportunities for questions.

Please note: This is not a qualifying training. To become an EMDR therapist, you must complete the standard accredited training. Details of EMDR Europe/EMDR Association accredited trainers are available from the EMDR Association UK website.
