📚 Books

A Black Empathic Approach to Psychotherapy: Growing from Rage to Compassion” – Dr. Isha Mckenzie

This book presents the concept of a black Empathic Approach, an experiential model used as a means of developing powerful feelings associated with racism, such as fear, guilt, and rage, into a useful therapeutic tool for healing the intersectional impact of anti- black racism and associated oppressions.

Chapters support processing, engagement and dialogue with contexts of anti- black racism in psychotherapy and counsellor training to provide a powerful framework for therapeutic discussion, teaching, learning and practice. This book is intended for therapists, coaches, support workers, social workers, training institutes, and anyone else attempting to support individuals and groups impacted by racism.

Dr. Isha Mckenzie- Mavinga, Retired Psychotherapist, poet and lecturer, has thirty three years’ experience as a Transcultural Psychotherapist, Supervisor, Lecturer, Writer and Reiki Master. Isha initiated therapeutic services at the African Caribbean Mental Health Association in Brixton, and at Women’s Trust, working with women impacted by violence in relationships. She was a student counsellor and senior lecturer at London Metropolitan University and taught at Goldsmiths University of London.

And How Does That Make You Feel?: everything you (n)ever wanted to know about therapy” – Joshua Fletcher

Psychotherapist Josh Fletcher takes the reader on a candid and human journey into the individual sessions of four patients – Levi, Zahra, Noah and Daphne – sharing their self-discovery and recovery as they engage in therapy for the first time. And he lets us into the inner thoughts of a therapist, from shock and sympathy while in session, to how it feels to run into a former client on a messy night out.

Interspersed with straight-talking advice on common issues such as anxiety, OCD and panic attacks, as well as a therapist’s guide to how to find the right therapist, And How Does That Make You Feel? is darkly funny, illuminating and full of promise that a better future is always possible.

Joshua Fletcher MSc MBACP is a UK-based author and psychotherapist specialising in working with anxiety disorders.

Rest Is Resistance: Free yourself from grind culture and reclaim your life” – Tricia Hersey

Divided into four sections, Rest is Resistance explains Tricia’s philosophy and methods, and includes both storytelling and practical advice. It will offer you the guidance and context to craft a rest practice for long-term health, both within yourself and society as a whole.

Rest is Resistance is not self-care: it is the urgent wake-up call you need to nap, rest and, most importantly, dream once more.

Tricia Hersey is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, theologian and community organizer. She is the founder of The Nap Ministry, an organization that examines rest as a form of resistance and reparations by curating spaces for the community to rest via community rest activations, immersive workshops, performance art installations, and social media.
