November’s Therapist‘s Corner includes a selection of the best TV shows, books, podcasts, blogs, resources, quotes and memes (both classic and new) that we’ve come across to support you in your therapy and counselling work.
Our goal is to educate, inform and occasionally bring a smile to your face, and make your online experience a little more enjoyable.

Diagnosis

As emotional as it is illuminating, Diagnosis‘ deep dives into the lives of patients navigating complicated health care systems is at once harrowing and hopeful.
Based on Dr. Lisa Sanders’ popular column in The New York Times Magazine, Diagnosis follows various patients on their respective journeys toward finding a diagnosis, and potentially a cure, for their mysterious illnesses. By combining the power of global crowdsourcing, social media, and established medical expertise, each case is untangled with illuminating new insights that had previously eluded doctors.
Books
“Chemically Imbalanced: The Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin Myth” – Joanna Moncrieff
In Chemically Imbalanced, renowned psychiatrist Joanna Moncrieff takes readers on a thought-provoking journey through the history of the serotonin theory of depression, from its origins in the 1960s to its widespread acceptance in the 1990s. With clarity and compelling evidence, Moncrieff exposes how scientific understanding has been swayed by social and economic forces, leading to misconceptions that have shaped treatment decisions for millions.
Accessible yet profoundly insightful, Chemically Imbalanced is essential reading for anyone seeking to make more informed choices about their mental health and understand the forces that shape the way we perceive and treat depression today.
“Internal Family Systems: Making A Start (and Getting Curious about Parts)”– Emma E. Redfern
Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS) is the fastest growing psychotherapy in the world – perhaps because it can be used in everyday life, at any different level, by anyone willing to embrace the paradigm shift of parts and Self-leadership.
In Internal Family Systems: Making A Start, leading IFS therapist Emma Redfern will introduce the revolutionary concept of multiplicity, or parts, in a book which will challenge everything that you ever thought about therapy.
With curiosity, a superpower quality, at its core, this book features all the key IFS concepts, practices and methods of use, along with an explanation of its benefits and a troubleshooting section (in addition to informative appendices). It is likely you will never think about yourself in the same way again, or underestimate the power of curiosity, as you begin your journey in understanding your own internal family of parts and Self.
“” – Dr Lucy Horne
Grief is not confined to bereavement. Yet society rarely recognises these non-death losses, leaving many feeling isolated and unseen.
From bestselling author and TED speaker Dr Lucy Hone comes a timely guide to surviving living loss-the feeling that follows divorce, illness, estrangement, redundancy, infertility or any other life upheaval.
Drawing on her own experience of multiple losses, decades of resilience research, and the voices of others navigating profound change, Hone offers a unique lifeline. Structured around twenty key questions, How Will I Ever Get Through This? gently assists readers to move from initial overwhelm (Why do I feel so physically exhausted?) to hopeful re-engagement (Who and what do you want to live for?).
“The Unshaming Way, The: A 3-Part Model for Dismantling Shame” – David Bedrick
In this book author, mental health expert, and professor David Bedrick reveals that there really is no good “use” for shame – and offers a revolutionary model to dismantle it. He shows how shame affects us all…and often in ways we might not expect. Shame connects to our struggles, our relationships, how we show up in the world, and how the world shows up (or fails to) for us. So how we can shed our shame, integrate our trauma, and unleash the personal power, efficacy, and confidence that are our birthright?
Bedrick explores the roots of shame, sharing the connections between trauma, shame, and experiential validation–and explains how shame shows up when woundedness isn’t seen, held, and appreciated by ourselves and our loved ones.
He helps us understand the role of boundaries in healing from shame; how shame impacts our physical health and wellness; how to unshame disturbing feelings; and the interconnections among body, social issues, shame, and abuse.

This visual metaphor of grief captures the lived reality many people describe: a sudden fall into shock, a period of intense emotional and physical disruption, and a gradual, uneven reorganisation of life. You may revisit different parts of the whirlpool many times. Nothing about this journey is tidy — and nothing about it is wrong.
The model is widely attributed to Dr Richard Wilson, a consultant paediatrician in the UK. It is described as a pictorial approach to grief showing the “River of Life,” “Waterfall of Bereavement,” and “Whirlpool of Grief.”
The metaphor portrays how a person is suddenly plunged into overwhelming emotional turmoil after loss, before gradually moving toward acceptance and reorganisation.
Meme – For a Chuckle

Client: makes joke to avoid vulnerability.
Therapist: writes three process notes and reaches for “let’s stay with that.”
Words to Ponder: Victor Frankl
