Last of Us (TV Series)

Fancy a good dose of psychology drama? We got you! The Last of Us is violent and maudlin. It depicts a world in which people are doing what they can to survive, with varying degrees of horror.

In the world of The Last of Us, empathy is often wielded as a tool to manipulate others or gain their trust. It’s how the survivors of the show’s zombie apocalypse survive and regain their humanity, but it’s also the thing that most frequently puts them at risk.

It navigates the themes of trauma, survival, attachment, and the instinctual drive for connection amidst desolation.

Available on Netflix.

A Real Pain

Mismatched cousins David and Benji tour Poland to honour their grandmother. Their adventure becomes complicated as old tensions resurface while exploring their family history.

The movie, to put it simply, is about pain. Not just the pain of the Holocaust, but the individual pain each person carries inside and attempts to cope with on a daily basis.

With uncommon insight, A Real Pain gently addresses myriad examples of intergenerational trauma that run the gamut from a lack of self-respect to self-loathing, leading to an inability to connect with others and the devastation of failed relationships.

Read about the movie on Psychology Today.

Available on Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

“When I Grow Up: conversations with adults in search of adulthood” – Moya Sarner

From early adulthood through to old age, When I Grow Up examines each life stage, interrogating the traditional markers of adulthood and finding new ones. Through conversations with grown-ups from all walks of life, and through her own experiences and training, Sarner probes deep into our psyches to discover how we grow and develop, and what we need to thrive throughout our lives.

Moya Sarner is a psychodynamic psychotherapist and award-winning freelance journalist based in London. She has written for The Times, The Guardian, New Scientist, Stylist, and other publications. When I Grow Up is her first book.

Everything You Need to Know about Hoarding” – Laura J. Edwards and Dr Lynne M. Drummond

This new book provides a clear description of hoarding, exploring it as a symptom of other issues as well as a condition in its own right. You’ll learn about different treatment options and find step-by-step guidance and tools for recovery in the self-help section.

Personal narratives and case studies make this guide accessible and relatable for those affected by hoarding, as well as their loved ones and health professionals.

“Black Women, Trauma and Therapy: Revolutionising therapeutic thoughts and practice” – Helen P. George

This book brings together leading theorists and practitioners to present their radical thinking and innovative work at the cutting edge of intersectionality. Its chapters are hard-hitting, incisive, challenging, shocking, lyrical and inspiring, often all at once. They cover a vast spectrum of issues impacting on Black women’s mental health and wellbeing amid the ubiquity of racial and gender injustice, attacks and invisibility.

In this book, you will find essays on childlessness and infertility, the black empathic approach, maternal health and epistemic justice, group work with Black women, self-care in an unjust society, mixed-race multiplicity, African-centred approaches, healing transgenerational trauma, a black feminist ethics of care, and much more.

Inspired by the 2022 Community Trauma UK conference ‘Black Women, Trauma and Mental Health’, this book is a revolutionary resource for the counselling, psychotherapy and mental health professions.

“Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame: Healing Right Brain Relational Trauma – 2nd Edition” – Patricia A. DeYoung

A masterful synthesis of relational and attachment theory, neurobiology, and contemporary psychoanalysis, Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame has been internationally recognized as an essential text on shame. Integrating new theory about trauma, shame resilience, and self-compassion, this second edition further clarifies the relational, right-brain essence of being in and with the suffering of shame.

Lucid and compassionate, this book engages with the most profound challenges of clinical practice and touches into the depths of being human.
