Professor Julia Buckroyd

Julia Buckroyd is Emeritus Professor of Counselling at the University of Hertfordshire and a therapist in private practice, specialising in working with people with all sorts of problems with food, weight, shape and size.
Disordered Eating
She is particularly interested in the meaning and function of the manipulation of food and looks for triggers to episodes of food misuse. She believes that clients are unlikely to abandon their eating habits unless they learn alternative means of life management and so focuses on helping clients develop better means of emotional regulation.
Julia has spent many years involved in a range of research on disordered eating and has written widely on the subject. This includes a number of books for the general public, such as Understanding Your Eating: How To Eat And Not Worry About It (2011), as well as books for practitioners such as Psychological Responses to Eating Disorders and Obesity (2008), co-edited with Sharon Rother.
Narcissism
Over her 40-year career working with many forms of disordered eating and many other client presentations, Julia has become aware of the problems created by parents who have strong narcissistic traits.
A child in that environment rarely develops a strong and authentic voice of their own and may use an eating disorder as a signal of things left unsaid and unheard. Understanding how a narcissistic parent may affect the child’s development is useful in working with clients who need to develop further into autonomous people who can surrender the strategies (for instance, of food misuse) that they have had to use growing up.
