SUMMARY:Family Estrangement: The power of silence
DESCRIPTION:Exploring estrangement through an attachment lens. Why do some people walk away from their families\, or become banished from families\, with Tori Settle. \nFriday 19th June 2026. \nONLINE CPD Training for Therapists via Zoom. Can’t make the date? Watch the recording on CATCH-UP for 28 days. \nEvent Times: 10.00am – 4.00pm GMT (London)/ 11.00am – 5.00pm CET (Paris)/ 5.00am – 11.00am EST (New York). \nTickets: £119 or £99 (full ticketing information at the end of this listing). **Sunday 22nd February – The Super Early Bird Tickets for this event have now sold out\, but there are still Discounted Tickets available** \n*Family Estrangement: The power of silence* \nEvent Description: \nFamily estrangement is a common experience\, and it is often shrouded in shame\, secrecy and silence. Around a quarter of people have experienced some form of family estrangement\, with around one in ten people cutting ties with either a parent or an adult child. Many people find themselves\, not necessarily through choice\, distanced from family members for many years\, even decades. \nIn this brand new one-day workshop there will be the space to explore estrangements within families – estrangements which are deeply painful and traumatic for all involved. \nHow can attachment theory help to throw light on what seems to be such an anti-attachment statement – by family members who make the choice to withdraw from the family unit sometimes for years at a time\, or even a whole lifetime. \nThere are multi-faceted reasons why family members might become estranged from one another\, such as divorce\, family disputes\, childhood abuse\, a clash of expectations\, betrayals\, or mental health issues. \nWe will look at what underpins estrangement by parents\, siblings\, sons and daughters and think together about what is being so powerfully communicated when someone walks away from\, or is banished from\, the family unit. \nMorning Session – In the morning session we will explore what contributes to estrangements and cover all the different areas that help to cause family members to cut off all connection with one another. \nAfternoon Session – In the afternoon session there will be a case study presentation\, plus a session that will explore loss and how family members respond to estrangement from an attachment based perspective. \nTrainer:  \nVictoria Settle (Tori) is the current Chair of Education\, and former CEO\, of The Bowlby Centre in London. She is an attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor and is registered as a psychoanalyst with the UKCP. \nShe is a regular and very popular presenter of workshops on attachment issues for Brighton Therapy Partnership. \nTrailer: \n \nPRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP \nOnline CPD Workshop for Counsellors & Psychotherapists: This workshop will be delivered via Zoom.
