Summary: In this workshop we will explore how we might work with shame in the consulting room, including shameful feelings about the body.
*Shame and The Body*
Profound and pervasive feelings of shame underly many of the reasons clients seek psychotherapeutic input and support. Since shame is a hidden emotion by its very nature, bringing shameful feelings into the open can be a potent avenue of healing.
In this workshop with psychologist, psychotherapist, trainer and author Dr Nicole Schnackenberg we will explore the experience of shame, an under-explored emotion yet one most likely to bring people to therapy. We will be paying particular attention to shameful feelings about the body, and how we might work with feelings of shame in the consulting room.
To begin with, we will delve into the psychobiological substrates of shame including its emergence within the developmental history. We will then consider the multiplicity of ways in which shame can present itself in a client’s life and within the therapeutic space, including a consideration of shame projected onto the body, i.e. shame concretised.
Aspects of exploring and assimilating developmental trauma with clients will form a central part of the workshop focus.
During the day we will draw upon ideas from The Power Threat Meaning Framework; Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy; Internal Family Systems; Voice Dialogue and Trauma-Informed Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Therapy.
Included in the day will be a range of ideas for working with shame, including with body-focused shame and appearance-focused distress.
Dr Nicole Schnackenberg is a Child, Community and Educational Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Yoga Therapist. She has authored various books on appearance-focused distress including: False Bodies, True Selves: Moving Beyond Appearance-Focused Identity Struggles and Returning to the True Self (Karnac: Routledge, 2016) and Bodies Arising: Fall in Love with your Body and Remember your Divine Essence (John Hunt, 2019), as well as a number of co-authored and edited books including her latest edited publication Trauma-Informed and Embodied Approaches to Body Dysmorphic Disorder (Jessica Kingsley, 2023).
