Summary: This is a one-day introduction to EMDR, and also a good preparation and exploratory day for anyone wishing to undertake the 8-day qualifying training in EMDR.
*EMDR Psychotherapy: Intro and Insights*
As EMDR has continued to grow its evidence base, instead of asking “does it work?” we are starting to ask, “how does it work?” and “how do I integrate it into my work?”.
In this introductory workshop to EMDR we will be guided through an overview of trauma and how symptoms of PTSD can affect an individual. The 8 phased, 3-pronged approach of EMDR will be described through various case examples, to demonstrate how EMDR is an experiential process that has been used for developmental trauma, complex PTSD and single incident cases.
We will also explore the Adaptive Information Processing model, the foundation model for EMDR psychotherapy, and how EMDR can be integrated into clinical practice.
To partially understand how EMDR works, you will be guided through a stabilisation technique used in EMDR that you will be able to use yourself and with your clients.
EMDR is a trans-diagnostic, integrative psychotherapy that is recommended by the World Health Organisation (2013) and NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence, 2007) for the treatment of PTSD with emerging evidence supporting its use for other mental health conditions.
When an individual has been exposed to, read about or witnessed a traumatic event, they can develop symptoms of PTSD. If a trauma isn’t properly processed, it can become stuck in a state-specific form. When triggered, a person can experience increased arousal, affect and feel like they are back in that traumatic event (reliving). EMDR has been shown to assist the brain’s natural ability to process traumatic events in a shorter time compared to other evidence-based therapies. The individual will remember the event but no longer feel like they are reliving it.
- To understand the symptoms of trauma and prevalence rates
- Understanding of the neuroscience of EMDR and how we process trauma
- The impact of unprocessed traumas through the AIP system
- The 8 phased, 3-pronged approach of EMDR
- The telescope model of EMDR and how it can be used in a variety of settings
- Case examples discussed to increase your understanding of the process
- A stabilisation technique “Safe/calm place” demonstration
- How to integrate EMDR into your practice
Please note: This is not a qualifying training. To qualify as an EMDR therapist you will need to complete the full 8-day training. A full list of EMDR Association accredited trainers is available on the EMDR Association UK website (or the equivalent if you are not UK based).
Adam Getty is a BABCP accredited CBT Therapist and EMDR Europe Accredited Consultant based in Mirabilis Health Institute, Belfast. He is the Chair of the EMDR Ulster Committee and sits on the EMDR All Ireland Committee.
