Summary: We will consider how therapy can enable clients to explore their ‘storied self’ in order to achieve ‘earned secure attachment’.

*Gaining Security in Therapy: Secure Attachment, identity and transgenerational narrative*

Event Description:

Attachment Theory offers us a wonderful lens with which to understand the influence of early bonding upon the nature and shape of relationships and attachments that are formed in adulthood with other people and with ourselves.

In therapy we are pretty likely to be working with people whose early experiences have left them with anxious, avoidant, or preoccupied attachment styles, and they may sometimes struggle to understand themselves and to navigate their most important relationships in life.

In this one-day workshop with Linda Cundy we will learn how the experience of therapy can enable these clients to achieve what attachment researchers call ‘earned secure attachment’ through the process of exploring and constructing their ‘storied self’.

Securely attached individuals have a strong, stable sense of their own identity; they “know where they are coming from.” Insecure attachment may be evident through a weak sense of one’s identity, relying on a manufactured False Self to deal with the world or confusion over one’s psychic boundaries. At the extreme, we may see defences such as grandiose narcissistic armouring or a fragmented sense of self.

We are all familiar with the shadow cast by intergenerational trauma but loss of connection to our roots has implications too.

An important function of therapy is to enable clients to become “storied selves” with a coherent narrative. This workshop will outline Linda’s model of Attachment-Informed Therapy and will explain why an Intergenerational Narrative is a necessary component to enable attachment repair and explore some of the ways we can help clients construct theirs.

There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions.

Trainer:

Linda Cundy is an attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice, and a trainer specialising in attachment. She is the author of four books on attachment therapy including her latest, Attachment, Relationships and Food: From Cradle to Kitchen (2021).
